Area Rugs Cleaning and Care By Material
100% WOOL / WOOL MIXES
- For minor stains and in an emergency, immediately blot the stain. To clean, use a mild soap mixed with equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Periodic professional cleaning is always recommended to maintain your wool rug.
- Note: It is normal for new wool rugs to shed. Vacuum regularly with the beater bar off; shedding will reduce over time. This shedding process can take up to six months on some wool products.
VISCOSE / VISCOSE BLEND
- Professional cleaning is always recommended for stain removal or regular maintenance.
- For minor stains or emergencies: Blot stain immediately. Vacuum with the beater bar off. Consult professional help.
- Note: Viscose rugs should not be placed in areas with heavy traffic or moisture.
SARI SILK / SILK / TENCEL
- Professional cleaning is recommended for stain removal or regular cleaning care. In addition, periodic professional cleaning is recommended to protect your investment.
- In emergency situations, blot the stain immediately. Then, vacuum with the beater bar off.
- Note: Recycled silk, silk, or cellulose-based fibers are delicate and should not be placed in areas with heavy traffic or moisture.
100% COTTON
- Blot stains right away. Use a dry-cleaning powder to clean large cotton rugs.
- Check the labels for small cotton rugs to see if they can be machine washed in cold water on a gentle cycle.
- Vacuum regularly with the beater bar off.
- Note: Never machine dry!
POLYESTER / POLYPROPYLENE
- Blot stains right away. To clean, use a mild soap mixed with equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Vacuum regularly with the beater bar off.
- For indoor/outdoor rugs containing these materials, clean or remove stains using soap or detergent and rinse with clean water or a garden hose. Allow time for water to drain and dry before laying the rug out.
ACRYLIC
- Blot stains right away. To clean, use a mild soap mixed with equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Vacuum regularly with the beater bar off.
- Periodic professional cleaning is recommended.
SHAGS (Synthetic, Wool, or Blends)
- For smaller sizes, shake your rug to loosen dirt and dust that can build up within a higher pile. Use hand-held or upholstery attachment to vacuum shag rugs.
- Note: Regular shedding is common in these rugs, and weekly maintenance is expected.
NATURAL (JUTE / HEMP / SISAL / SEAGRASS)
- Blot stains immediately. Use mild soapy water and blot dry. Use a fan or dryer to speed up the drying process—natural materials should not be exposed to too much moisture.
- Vacuum regularly with the beater bar off, occasionally vacuuming under the rug to remove dirt and dust that can sift through the weave onto the floor.
- Note: Sprouts on natural rugs or stray tufts/loops are normal; trim with scissors to remove them.
